My kids are very oblivious to those who are in need. We are so blessed, so they don’t understand the feelings of being hungry or cold, despite what I’ve tried to explain to them. I think its super important to get your kids involved in giving back this time of year, to help them understand what it means to help those in need. My children are finally old enough to be able to participate in activities and actually understand what we are doing, and I have partnered with the Coca-Cola™ at Walmart’s “Layer On Love” program. This is a simple program for my kids to understand and get behind. They know what it means to be cold, and that some children don’t have warm jackets!
I talked to my children about the program, and how we can join Coca-Cola™ in giving coats to One Warm Coat® or by simply texting LOVE to 501501 to donate $5. One Warm Coat’s mission is to provide anyone in need with a warm coat free of charge.
We grabbed some Coke Zero™ at Walmart, and some reindeer antlers and festive bells to have our own conversation about how for most of us, when the temperatures drop too low for short sleeves and sweatshirts, solve the problem by tossing on our heavy jackets. But for the nearly 15% of Americans living in poverty, a winter coat is something “extra” that isn’t in the budget. The concept is still sinking in for my 3-year-old, but my 4-year-old totally got it, and is ready to give some coats for children who might be cold.
We made the conversation light, and talked about the joy of the Holiday season, and I explained how some families have a hard time enjoying the holidays because they don’t have enough resources to buy coats.
We did a cheers to giving back this year, and even talked about doing a coat drive, to gather coats from others! Texting LOVE to 501501 to donate $5 is a no-brainer, but there is the option to hold a coat drive if you want to do more. It’s super simple now to create an event on Facebook and get friends together to give more!
The Coca-Cola™ Layer On Love program is so simple, and completely heart-warming because my children don’t want other kids to be cold! The simplicity of just sending a text (LOVE to 501501 to donate $5) makes it even easier to give back.
